The Chairman of Ways and Means from 1831 to 1833, Gulian Verplanck of New York replaced George McDuffie, the committee's anti-tariff leader.  Ironically, Verplanck drew Jackson's ire when he would not follow the President's opposition to the rechartering of the Second Bank of the United States.  Verplanck wrote the Ways and Means majority report that declared the Bank sound and stable, findings contrary to those Jackson wanted.  Verplanck's defiance cost him favor with the administration and his career at the federal level ended in 1833.
