When the Republicans took back the majority of the House in November 1993 for the first time in 40 years, Bill Archer (R-TX), became Chairman of the Committee. The Republican party had promised to enact Congressional reforms in the "Contract With America" within the first 100 days of the Congress, most of which were in the jurisdiction of the Committee on Ways and Means. He has been Chairman since 1994, and will be retiring at the end of 2000. |
