Camp, Nunes Statements on New U.S. Case Against India’s Local Content Requirements on Solar Products

February 6, 2013 — Press Releases

Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) released the following statements in response to the U.S. action to request consultations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding India’s local content requirements on certain solar technologies contained in India’s National Solar Mission program.

Chairman Camp: “India isn’t playing by the rules, and USTR is right to go to the WTO to hold it accountable for its local content requirements.  Unfortunately, India’s policies are part of a broader trend that is putting U.S. jobs at risk, inhibiting investment, and undermining our ability to sell American goods in other countries.  Whenever such cases arise, America must defend our trading rights, and I look forward to working closely with USTR to address damaging forced localization barriers in India, China, Argentina, and elsewhere around the world.”

Trade Subcommittee Chairman Nunes: “I commend Ambassador Kirk and his team for filing this important case against India’s local content requirements on certain solar products.  These discriminatory measures, which harm U.S. companies and workers, must be addressed.  The United States should exercise its rights whenever we believe a country has violated its WTO obligations.”
