Republican Robert C. Schenck of Ohio, earned the nickname "Poker Bob" after accepting a diplomatic assignment in Great Britain. Schenck, an excellent card player, impressed an English duchess to whom he wrote a letter describing the game of poker which was later published. His name was also cited in the sale of silver mine stock from Nevada to Great Britain. A congressional investigation followed, however no evidence of any wrong doing was uncovered. Schenck later resigned and returned to Washington to publish a book entitled Draw Poker in 1880. |
