Committee on Ways and Means For Immediate Release Bipartisan Compromise Reached on Trade Promotion Authority WASHINGTON – This afternoon, Democrats and Republicans will introduce a bipartisan compromise to provide President Bush with the authority to negotiate agreements that reduce barriers to international trade. Trade promotion authority – previously known as "fast-track" – lapsed in 1994, and has not since been renewed. The authority grants the President flexibility in negotiating trade deals, while retaining the right of Congress to vote an agreement down if it does not approve.
