FROM THE COMMITTEE ON WAYS AND MEANS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Statement by Congressman Bill Thomas On Election as Ways & Means Chairman Thursday, January 4, 2001 To my colleagues, thank you. I am honored and humbled in the trust you have placed in me to serve as your Ways & Means Committee Chairman. I would also like to thank Rep. Phil Crane and Rep. Clay Shaw for their commitment to a fair contest. We continue to be a team and will press forward with our responsibilities. We can and must work to make our tax system fair and equitable. We have made some progress in easing the tax burden on Americans and we intend to build on that record of success. Today we have a great opportunity to work together to reduce the tax burden, increase trade opportunities, enhance personal retirement security, and reform Medicare while adding a prescription drug benefit to the program. I look forward to working with the House, Senate and President-elect George W. Bush on behalf of the American people on whose trust and support we depend. PRINT
