Congressman Bill Thomas (R-CA) Elected to Chair Ways & Means Committee in 107th Congress

Thursday, January 4, 2001

WASHINGTON - Congressman Bill Thomas (R-CA), was today elected by the House Republican Conference to serve as Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means in the 107th Congress.  For information about Chairman Thomas’ career in Congress and his biography, please click here to refer to his website.

Chairman Thomas issued the following statement following his election as Chairman: “To my colleagues, thank you.  I am honored and humbled in the trust you have placed in me to serve as your Ways and Means Committee Chairman.  I would also like to thank Rep. Phil Crane and Rep. Clay Shaw for their commitment to a fair contest.  We continue to be a team and will press forward with our responsibilities.”

“I’ll have more to say very soon about the agenda of the Ways and Means Committee.  We can and must work to make our tax system fair and equitable.  We have made some progress in easing the tax burden on Americans and we intend to build on that record of success.  Today we have a great opportunity to work together to reduce the tax burden, increase trade opportunities, enhance personal retirement security, and reform Medicare while adding a prescription drug benefit to the program.”

“This Committee has always been the workhorse Committee in Congress, and it will continue to be under my Chairmanship.  President-elect Bush’s agenda will start right here, and I welcome the opportunity to work with him on his bold economic plan.  I spoke tonight to President-elect Bush, and I intend to speak with Treasury Secretary-designate Paul O’Neill and Senate Finance Chairman Grassley very soon so we can get off to a quick start at this pivotal moment in our economy.”

“I look forward to working with the House, Senate and President-elect Bush on behalf of the American people on whose trust and support we depend.”
