NEWS FROM THE COMMITTEE ON WAYS AND MEANS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Trent Duffy or Greg Crist March 12, 2001 (202) 225-8933 Chairman Thomas Makes Staff Announcements Matt Weidinger to Head Human Resources Subcommittee; Jennifer Baxendell, David Kavanaugh Join Committee for Health & Trade WASHINGTON – Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA) today announced that Matt Weidinger has returned to the Ways and Means Committee to serve as the staff director for the Human Resources Subcommittee. Chairman Thomas today also announced that Jennifer Baxendell and David Kavanaugh will join the Health and Trade Subcommittees, respectively, as professional staff. "I’m pleased that Matt has decided to join our team again as the staff director for the Human Resources Subcommittee. As a primary author of the 1996 welfare reform law, Matt has firsthand knowledge of those complex issues and will serve the Committee well as Congress seeks to renew the law and improve the system for recipients and taxpayers," said Chairman Thomas. "I’m also pleased to have Jennifer Baxendell and David Kavanaugh join the Committee. Jennifer’s work on the Senate Finance Committee and with the National Governors Association will give the Committee a comprehensive understanding of health policy and the laws Congress writes. Additionally, David’s experience as the principal trade adviser in my personal office will serve the Members of this Committee well as we address Trade Promotion Authority and other important trade issues this year," said Chairman Thomas. Biographies of Mr. Weidinger, Ms. Baxendell, and Mr. Kavanaugh follow: MATT WEIDINGER Prior to his departure in mid-2000 to become Manager of Government Relations for USX Corporation, Mr. Weidinger served on the Committee staff since 1995. In 1999 and early 2000, Mr. Weidinger served as professional staff member on the Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee, where he specialized in Social Security reform proposals, among other measures. From 1995 through 1998, Mr. Weidinger served as professional staff member on the Ways and Means Human Resources Subcommittee, where he assisted in drafting the 1996 Welfare Reform Law, including work, cash benefits and disability policies. From 1990 through 1994, Mr. Weidinger served as a Senior Legislative Assistant to Rep. Clay Shaw (R-FL), where he focused on health and Social Security issues. Mr. Weidinger received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, and he earned his Master of Political Science degree from the University of Chicago. JENNIFER BAXENDELL Jennifer Baxendell is a former senior advisor to the Senate Finance Committee for health policy, where she worked on Medicare reform and the development of a prescription drug benefit, among other issues. Prior to joining the Senate Finance Committee, Ms. Baxendell served as the Director of Health Legislation for the National Governors Association. During her tenure, she coordinated policy and lobbying efforts for the nation’s governors on health care, including Medicaid and the children’s health insurance program (S-CHIP). Before coming to Washington, Ms. Baxendell was a Special Assistant to Ohio Governor George Voinovich supervising health policy in the Governor’s Office. Ms. Baxendell received her Bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University. DAVID KIRK KAVANAUGH David Kirk Kavanaugh is the former counsel for the House Administration Committee and Legislative Assistant for Chairman Thomas’ personal office on trade, agriculture, and other issues. Prior to joining the Chairman’s personal staff, Mr. Kavanaugh was an associate attorney for Exxon from 1990-1996. Mr. Kavanaugh received both his undergraduate and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
