Legislators Consider Lifting Trade Restrictions on Russia

WASHINGTON- Restoring permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) for Russia will be a focus for legislators this week. Over the last eight years Russia has complied with the terms of the Jackson-Vanik provisions by removing restrictions on emigration. Now the Subcommittee on Trade will examine whether to give Russia unconditional nondiscriminatory trade treatment by granting PNTR

Chairman Philip M. Crane (R-IL), said, “The Administration has placed a priority on forging a new relationship with Russia. As part of that effort, President Bush has personally indicated his interest in seeing Congress end trade restrictions on Russia. At this hearing, the Subcommittee will examine the impact that such action would have on U.S. interests.”

What: Hearing of the Subcommittee on Trade

When: Thursday, April 11 at 10:00 a.m.
