Building on the Successes of Welfare Reform
Secretary Thompson Testifies on the President’s Proposal

WASHINGTON-The achievements of welfare reform have been dramatic. Never before have the benefits of dignity, and the rewards of self-support been so apparent. Work levels among current and former recipients have risen to record highs. Caseloads have been reduced by nine million individuals, and three million children have been lifted out of poverty.

Although the results of welfare reform have been tremendous, there is still much to be achieved.

In announcing the hearing, Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA), stated, “The welfare reform law has been a great success. Expecting and supporting work has made a huge difference in the lives of millions of families. Caseloads have plummeted, work and incomes are up, and poverty has fallen dramatically. We welcome Secretary Thompson, the leader of the welfare reform revolution as Governor of Wisconsin in the 1980s and 1990s, to discuss with the Committee the President’s proposals for strengthening welfare reform and helping even more low-income families enjoy the dignity and rewards of work and self-support.”
