Committee on Ways and Means For Immediate Release Thomas Announces Committee Action on H.J. Res. 84, a Resolution to Disapprove the President’s Actions Regarding Steel Imports WASHINGTON—Yesterday, the Committee on Ways and Means adversely reported H.J. Res. 84, disapproving the action taken by the President under section 203 of the Trade Act of 1974 regarding steel, without amendment, by voice vote. The effect of the resolution, introduced by Rep. Bill Jefferson (D-LA) on March 7, 2002, would be to enact the proposed recommendations by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) concerning steel instead of the President’s remedy determination. The practical effect of the Committee’s action yesterday is that it rejected replacing the President’s remedy with the ITC’s proposed remedy on steel products. Despite the adverse report, H. J. Res. 84 has privileged status and will receive consideration by the full House of Representatives, according to section 152(d) of the Trade Act of 1974.
