Providing Tax Support When
Americans Need It
Legislators Focus on Tax Filing
 Process As April 15 Approaches

WASHINGTON- Americans across the country are busily filling out their tax returns in anticipation of Tax Day. This year the IRS will handle over 100 million tax refunds and answer 108 million telephone calls as American taxpayers file more than 137 million tax returns.

Although the IRS is working at maximum capacity during tax season, it is their job to offer Americans customer-friendly service when responding to tax inquiries. The Subcommittee will examine the performance of the IRS in meeting those needs.

Chairman Amo Houghton (R-NY) said, “Improved customer service was the promise of the new IRS after the Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998. By examining the current process of the tax season, we will be able to ensure that the IRS is living up to its promise by offering assistance to taxpayers who need it.”
