Ways and Means For Immediate Release Moving Individuals from WASHINGTON- Legislators will explore proposals to further strengthen improvements made in the landmark 1996 Welfare Reform law. This legislation is one of the most significant measures ever enacted to improve the lives of low-income parents and their children. It has provided both the hope and knowledge that welfare is not a way of life, but the means to a better one. In a few short years, caseloads have dropped by 60 percent nationwide and child poverty has fallen by nearly three million. While these dramatic changes are evidence of the success of welfare reform, more must be done. Families who still need assistance should have the help they need, but welfare benefits must continue to promote job preparation, a solid work ethic and stronger families. Chairman Wally Herger (R-CA), said, “This hearing will give us the opportunity to hear from the Nation’s Governors, State legislators, State welfare administrators, and a host of other community voices about what has worked, and ideas for further reform.”
