House Democrats Produce Political Document on Rx Drugs, says Thomas

WASHINGTON  -- Today, Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA) made the following statement about the introduction of Medicare legislation by House Democrats:

“Just one year ago House Democrats, including Mr. Gephardt and Mr. Rangel, voted to spend $303 billion for Medicare and Social Security*.  Today, they’ve introduced legislation that spends nearly three times as much on Medicare alone.  Compassion shouldn’t be measured by unrealistic demands to double or triple the amount of money that was seen as sufficient just one year ago.

“We’re developing responsible legislation that will offer a comprehensive, affordable prescription drug benefit for seniors.  House Democrats have produced a political document for an election year.”

Chairman Thomas and Health Subcommittee Chairwoman Nancy Johnson (R-CT) are crafting legislation with the House Energy and Commerce Committee to provide a permanent prescription drug benefit for seniors while also taking steps to improve Medicare.
