Committee on Ways and Means For Immediate Release House Moves to Conference on Trade Promotion Authority **Senate Must Now Act** WASHINGTON - Yesterday, the House moved a step closer to delivering trade negotiating authority to the U.S. President, helping workers displaced by trade and enriching our trading relationship with Andean, Caribbean and African nations. With passage of H. Res. 450, the House motioned to go to conference on a comprehensive trade package. "Yesterday the House voted to increase the Congress’ ability to deliver a signable bill to the President’s desk. We combined our trade measures into one package to provide the House with the strongest negotiating position possible in conference," Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA) said. "Today, more than ever, economic growth and job creation is dependent on free trade. The House will work overtime so that we can deliver a bill to the President by August. But first the Senate must name conferees. I urge Senator Daschle to do so before the Congress recesses for the fourth of July district work period," he added. After the Senate names its conferees and votes to go to conference, the House and Senate conferees will meet to work out differences between their two versions of the trade package. |
