Trade Promotion Authority Continues to Work

Agreement in Principle Announced on U.S.-Chile FTA

WASHINGTON - Today the United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador, Robert Zoellick, announced a free trade agreement (FTA) in principle between the United States and Chile. Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA) issued the following statement:

“Ambassador Zoellick has negotiated a good agreement in principle with Chile, and we look forward to reviewing the final details during continued Congressional consultation. This newest agreement builds upon the successful negotiations with Singapore. Once again our efforts to open markets for American goods and services have been significantly enhanced with the passage of the Trade Act of 2002.

“I also want to commend USTR for taking seriously its duty to consult with Congress. USTR has been in daily contact with us during the final days of negotiations, and we appreciate its diligent efforts to keep us apprised of the issues and status of discussion.”
