Securing Rx Drug Benefit for Seniors
is a Top Priority, says Thomas

WASHINGTON -- Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas responds to American Association of Retired Persons' (AARP) advocacy to spend $750 billion on a prescription drug benefit.

"Modernizing Medicare and securing a prescription drug benefit for our seniors is a top priority," said Chairman Thomas.  "We are committed to action, and that is why I am disappointed in the AARP's recent statement."

"By insisting that Congress spend the Medicare Trust Fund on a new benefit, AARP is jeopardizing Medicare's viability for future generations, including their members between 50 and 65 years old who are approaching Medicare's eligibility age," he said.

"It seems unlikely that the 35 million seniors AARP claims to represent would support an approach that threatens the program for their children and grandchildren," Thomas added.
