Committee on Ways and Means For Immediate Release The Welfare Reform Clock Is Running Out. Is the Senate Listening? WASHINGTON - Under the leadership of Human Resources Subcommittee Chairman Wally Herger (R-CA), the House on May 16, 2002 acted to extend the success of welfare reform through passage of H.R. 4737, the “Personal Responsibility, Work, and Family Promotion Act of 2002.” The Democrat-led Senate has yet to take any action to extend the landmark 1996 welfare overhaul. “The historic 1996 welfare reform law has achieved remarkable success in reducing poverty, ending dependence, and promoting work. The House acted in May to extend this landmark law, which expires on September 30, 2002,” said Herger. “For more than a month we have waited for the Senate to follow suit; yet the Senate Democratic leadership has not even scheduled action on welfare reform. This program is too important, and has been too successful for millions of American families, to be treated with a ‘we’ll get to it later’ attitude,” Herger added.
