Helping Workers with Disabilities Get Back on the Job

Lawmakers Explore Program Aimed At Helping Workers On Disability

WASHINGTON - On Thursday, September 26, 2002, the Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee will hold its fourth in a series of hearings aimed at addressing the challenges and opportunities facing Social Security Disability programs.

The hearing will focus on the Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Program, which was signed into law in December of 1999. This program enables those receiving Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability benefits to choose the employment services they need from a service provider they choose to help them return to work. After two years of implementation, lawmakers will address recommendations from key stakeholders and the panel that oversees the program, such as increasing the public’s awareness of the program.

“Simply put, the Ticket to Work program is about work,” said Social Security Subcommittee Chairman E. Clay Shaw (R-FL). “Its aim is to replace barriers with opportunities so that individuals with disabilities may achieve their goal of working and supporting themselves and their families. We must ensure implementation of this important program proceeds smoothly, addresses the concerns and needs of individuals with disabilities who want to work, and assists organizations that are serving disabled persons.”
