Committee on Ways and Means For Immediate Release Welfare Reform Countdown: 5 Days Until Expiration Senate inaction will halt childcare funding WASHINGTON - With only five days until the expiration of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the successful 1996 welfare reform program, and related Federal child care funding, House Members continue to question when the Democrat-led Senate will vote to reauthorize this landmark law.If the Senate does not act, the flow of funds and flexibility for TANF and related childcare programs will be terminated. Sadly, if not acted on, America’s needy children will not see:
“When meeting with welfare mom and dads around the country, I have heard about a number of things they want and need available to them, including infant childcare, night time childcare, weekend childcare, and childcare for disabled folks with children,” said Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn (R-WA). “The House has added more resources to lend a hand to moms and dads. If the Senate doesn’t act, we can’t deliver this increased assistance to help them help themselves.” In May, the House passed legislation to reauthorize the hailed welfare reform law of 1996. In the four months since then, the Democrat-led Senate has failed to pass any legislation extending the 1996 welfare reforms, which expire on September 30, 2002.
