The Left Back Tracks on the Mandate
As the U.S. Supreme Court Prepares to Rule on the Constitutionality of the Health Care Law, the Obama Administration and Its Allies are Changing Their Tune

Nearly two-thirds of Americans are hoping that the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn some or all of the Democrats’ health care law.  The Obama Administration and their allies are already walking away from the arguments they made to the Supreme Court about how the requirement that Americans purchase health insurance, even if they cannot afford it, is “essential” to making ObamaCare work.

“Empirical evidence and analysis demonstrate that Congress correctly concluded that a minimum coverage provision —is essential to creating effective health insurance … the minimum coverage provision is essential to ensuring that the ACA  ameliorates significant negative effects on the national economy.”

“’Is [the mandate] important? Yes,’ said Ronald Pollack, head of Families USA, one of the key consumer groups that helped craft the measure. ‘Is it the most controversial provision in the Affordable Care Act?  Most certainly.  But is it the heart of health reform? No, not even close.’”
