Chairman broadens his inquiry to include group purchasing organizations

WASHINGTON, DC—In the latest Request for Information, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) solicited additional input from 3 group purchasing organizations (GPOs), as the committee seeks to better understand the health care sector’s role in the climate crisis and support its efforts to decarbonize. Working as an intermediary between providers and medical suppliers, GPOs are uniquely positioned to leverage purchasing power and move the health care industry toward more sustainable and socially responsible practices. These groups are responsible for contracting with various organizations involved in the production, transportation, and disposal of goods, which have an unquestionable effect on our climate. In fact, the health care supply chain accounts for up to three-quarters of the sector’s carbon emissions. GPOs have begun this work, but by further engaging with them and encouraging collaboration, critical change is possible. This RFI will provide insights as to how Congress can best support these changes and expand upon them.

The latest recipients of the RFI are: HealthTrust, Premier, Inc., and Vizient, Inc.
