Chairman Brady Welcomes Prime Minister Modi to Washington

June 8, 2016 — Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India to Congress and released the following statement:

“Prime Minister Modi’s visit presents an excellent opportunity to strengthen our strategic partnership with the largest democracy in the world.

“While the United States shares many values and ideals with our important ally India, we must continue to work together to improve our bilateral trade and investment relationship. Prime Minister Modi has shown strong leadership and there have been some positive developments since he took office in 2014. However, we continue to have significant challenges and frustrations with respect to India’s current trade and investment practices, including in the areas of foreign direct investment, tariffs and customs procedures, local content and localization requirements, standards and technical regulations, and intellectual property rights.

“I look forward to the Prime Minister’s address to Congress today. I hope he will solidify his commitment to addressing our concerns so that we can strengthen our relationship for the benefit of the people of the United States and India.”
