WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following United States Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai’s remarks outlining the Biden Administration’s next steps in the U.S.-China trade relationship, top Republican on the Ways and Means Committee Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) issued the following statement:

“Ambassador Tai should rely on Congress as a key partner as this Administration seeks tough, smart enforcement of the China Phase One Agreement, while keeping the pressure on China rather than U.S. workers and job-creators by appropriately targeting our tariffs.

 

“We could better confront China by proceeding to Phase Two negotiations, or through high-standard new trade agreements that strengthen economic partnerships with our allies. Sadly, the Biden Administration is not pursuing either, nor is it seeking renewal of crucial Trade Promotion Authority that would give them the tools they need.

 

“The best way to strengthen our hand against China is economic growth achieved by making permanent the Republican tax reform that led to a boom in wages, R&D, and investment—not by hurting our own economy by raising tax rates higher than China’s.”
