WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Sam Johnson (R-TX) announced today that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled, “Protecting Social Security from Waste, Fraud, and Abuse,” on Wednesday, May 18, at 10:00 AM in room B-318 of the Rayburn House Office Building. At the hearing, Inspector General Patrick O’Carroll will outline the challenges facing the Social Security Administration – specifically those that make the agency vulnerable to waste, fraud, and abuse.

Upon announcing the hearing, Chairman Johnson said:

“I’ve long been committed to exposing and rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse when it comes to Social Security and making sure each tax dollar is used wisely. Mr. O’Carroll has served as the Inspector General for over a decade, and before he retires I look forward to hearing from him on things we need to keep a close eye on and where tax dollars are at risk.”

BACKGROUND
Since 2004, Patrick O’Carroll has served as the Inspector General (IG) for the Social Security Administration (SSA) and is the agency’s longest serving IG. With Inspector General O’Carroll retiring at the end of the month, this hearing will focus on areas he sees as significant challenges facing the agency. Specifically he will discuss concerns with the SSA’s strategic planning, management of the representative payee program, and information technology, as well as increased efforts to fight fraud thanks to tools provided in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015.
