Remarks as prepared for delivery:
“Good afternoon. Today the Ways and Means Committee will markup the JOBS for Success Act. This is legislation that recognizes our new tax code is creating demand for workers all across the country, at every skill level.
“The truth is that those stuck on the sidelines aren’t liabilities to America, as some would suggest, but assets – and we need their help. With more than six million jobs open in America, and strong economic growth that’s projected by the CBO to reach to 3.3 percent by the end of the year, America needs all our workers.
“We’re not going to give up on anyone, because everyone deserves a chance to accomplish their hopes and dreams, and right now the more than 7 million men who aren’t in the workforce can’t do that without a job.
“The JOBS for Success Act restores the promise of the 1996 welfare reforms by requiring states to engage everyone who is work eligible, meaning no family in need gets left behind.
“The JOBS for Success Act also re-envisions the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program so more parents can get a job, but also importantly, keep that job – through allowing states more flexibility to provide transportation and childcare. It also will ensure there’s more transparency with what states are doing by giving them a score on how well they’re doing with moving folks into work.
“The bottom line is that we believe in people – that’s why we are here today looking at how we can best help more Americans move into the workforce, grow their career and support their families. With six million open jobs we need their help, and we need it now.”
