Washington, D.C. – The President announced last night his intention to implement tariffs on all imports from Mexico.

Brady On Tariff Announcement 

In response to the President’s announcement, Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), the top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee, said:

“The President has made it clear that Mexico must do more to stop this crisis at the border which seemingly has no end, and he is serious about taking whatever actions are necessary to find a real lasting solution.  

“Mexico is a valued ally and the new tariffs are not yet in effect, so there is a window here for both countries to find common ground. It is in both of our interests to do so, economically and for stronger security.

“Lawmakers in Congress and Mexico recognize that resolving this issue positively will be essential to passage of the new USMCA that will benefit workers, farmers, and businesses in both countries.”

Brady On SAA

Yesterday, United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer sent to Congress a draft Statement of Administrative Action (SAA) regarding the United States-Canada-Mexico Agreement (USMCA).

As required by the Trade Promotion Authority, this draft SAA must be sent to Congress at least 30 days prior to sending implementing legislation.  Rep. Brady said:

“The draft statement of administrative action does not formally start the legislative clock for consideration of USMCA but represents a productive outline of the issues to be discussed with Congress. 

“This is a useful procedural step as Ambassador Lighthizer continues to work closely with both parties in Congress to address concerns and build support for the crucial USMCA.”
