ADVISORY: GOP Meeting: Enforce USMCA to Make Trade Work for All Americans

May 23, 2022

Ways and Means Republicans will hold a roundtable titled “Enforce USMCA to Make Trade Work for All Americans,” hosted by Trade Subcommittee Republican Leader Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE), on Wednesday, May 25, at 12:00 PM EST.

The meeting will cover enforcement priorities for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to ensure Canada and Mexico live up to all their obligations so that American workers and families reap the full benefit of this gold-standard agreement.

WITNESSES:

  • Mark McHargue, President, Nebraska Farm Bureau
  • Stephen Comstock, Vice President – Corporate Policy, American Petroleum Institute

KEY BACKGROUND:

  • The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) puts American workers first by providing the United States with the ability to effectively enforce the new agreement and the new commitments that make North American trade stronger.
  • USMCA contains cutting-edge provisions on digital trade, agricultural rules and market access, services, and customs and trade facilitation that set the bar for future trade agreements.
  • Enforcement of USMCA means the U.S. can hold our trading partners to their commitments to raise wages and labor standards throughout the free trade area, and to provide better access to the Canadian and Mexican markets so our exporters can employ more workers here at home.
  • Both President Trump and President Biden have deployed USMCA’s enforcement tools, showing there is significant bipartisan support for full enforcement of the agreement.

This meeting will take place remotely via Cisco WebEx video conferencing.
