WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed legislation on a bipartisan basis to support Israel’s defense in response to the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas:
“As one of our oldest allies and the sole democracy in the Middle East, Israel needs our support now more than ever as they work to push back against the unprovoked and barbaric terrorist attack by Hamas. The successful passage of this legislation in the House is a testament to the special and longstanding relationship between the United States and Israel, and will ensure that the Israeli people have the tools and equipment they need to defeat Hamas.
“I am thankful that some of my Democrat colleagues recognized that even crucial aid like this must be offset in order to avoid worsening the inflation that has outpaced wages for 32 straight months since Joe Biden became President. By rescinding a mere $14.3 billion out of the $80 billion pay raise Democrats handed the IRS in their Inflation Reduction Act and directing it towards Israel, the House of Representatives spoke in a bipartisan voice that it prioritizes our support for Israel over expanding IRS targeting of working-class Americans.
“This should have been a slam dunk for all Members given our national security interests and the clear evidence – including by the Congressional Budget Office – showing that the IRS funding would result in more audits on lower- and middle-income earners. This vote allowed us to protect taxpayers and stand with Israel, all in a fiscally responsible way.”
