Chairman Smith Statement on Inauguration of President Trump

January 20, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement on the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States:

“Today America officially turns the page on four years of failed Democrat economic policies, and we can now begin a new chapter, with a renewed sense of hope for the future. We know that proven solutions to lift up working families and empower small businesses are back on the nation’s agenda with President Trump’s return to the White House. The Ways and Means Committee is ready. For the past two years, we have gone out into communities across this country, hearing directly from those affected by high prices, high interest rates, and the blanket of uncertainty that is weighing down economic growth and opportunity. We stand ready to deliver on President Trump’s policies, and that begins with extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts and building on their success to revitalize America’s main street, deliver higher wages for American workers, and incentivize even greater investment in manufacturing jobs here at home.

“Time is of the essence. With President Trump in the Oval Office, the top priority for Congress is to put an America First tax relief bill on his desk. Small businesses and American manufacturers are waiting to see if they can invest today in new equipment, hire more workers, and expand their operations. Farmers are waiting to see if they will be able to keep the family business in the family. Moms and dads are sitting around the kitchen table wondering if they will have the resources they need to raise their kids. We must move quickly to unleash the next Trump economic boom.

“The Ways and Means Committee will also work alongside President Trump to achieve more affordable health care, protect retirement security for America’s seniors, combat unfair trade practices by adversarial nations like China, support vulnerable families and help them achieve dignity through work, and fight the Washington bureaucracy. I look forward to working with the Trump Administration to deliver for the American people on all of these fronts and to do so as soon as possible.”
