Chairman Smith Congratulates Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Senate Confirmation

January 27, 2025

WASHINGTON – After the Senate voted to confirm Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent (68-29) on a bipartisan basis, Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement:

“My heartfelt congratulations to Secretary Bessent for his successful confirmation. Secretary Bessent will be a champion for working families and getting our economy back on track under President Trump. His background, including his rise from poverty to achieving great success, is a testament to the very American Dream we hope to restore for all Americans. He’s absolutely right that we can fundamentally improve the prosperity enjoyed by all by restoring economic growth – and key to that will be extending and building on the Trump tax cuts as soon as possible so families and small businesses can make decisions about their future. We can deliver the immediate economic relief they voted for.

“American workers can be confident they have a Treasury Secretary that stands with them, instead of allowing European socialists to dictate the taxes we pay. He will also be responsible for reeling in the Internal Revenue Service, an agency in dire need of reform after politicized leaks, unconstitutional delays of implementing the law, and expansive plans to audit every American.

“I look forward to working with Secretary Bessent to unleash the American economy through sound tax policy, deregulation, deficit reduction, and more American energy.”
