WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement after the Trump Administration announced it had secured an agreement with the United Kingdom to reduce barriers to American exports – including an increase in U.S. beef and ethanol exports to the UK and additional opening of the UK market to U.S. agriculture:
“President Trump is winning the fight for fairer treatment of American workers and producers. The UK is an important trading partner, and this agreement is a major win for our nation’s farmers and ranchers. Other nations have discriminated against American agriculture for years – in many cases outright banning the import of American food products. This agreement aligns with the work of Ways and Means Committee Republicans to fight back against discrimination that American farmers and ranchers face around the world.
“Unfortunately, due to President Biden’s weak trade agenda, the U.S. agricultural trade deficit skyrocketed to $32 billion. Under President Trump, our farmers and ranchers finally have a leader in the White House that fights for them. I look forward to continued partnership with the Trump Administration to finalize all the details of this important agreement while addressing other significant challenges in our bilateral relationship with the UK, including those related to digital trade and tax. I am confident that President Trump will soon secure additional wins in other key markets that level the playing field for American workers, farmers, and manufacturers.”
