WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08), Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chairman Vern Buchanan (FL-13), and Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Chairman David Schweikert (AZ-01) released the following statements after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) moved to protect the integrity of Medicare Advantage (MA) by expanding audits of MA plans to prevent fraud and overpayments.
Chairman Smith said, “I commend President Trump and his administration for taking bold and necessary action to protect the integrity of Medicare Advantage, which now serves more than half of our nation’s Medicare beneficiaries. Ensuring that this vital program delivers for America’s seniors means holding plans accountable and preventing fraud and overpayments in Medicare Advantage.
“While more can be done to combat potential waste, fraud, and abuse in MA, this proactive strategy sends a strong signal that the Trump Administration is serious about oversight, transparency, and fiscal responsibility within Medicare to preserve and protect benefits for our nation’s seniors. I applaud the Trump Administration for its leadership on this issue and look forward to working together to safeguard the future of MA for generations to come.”
Health Subcommittee Chairman Buchanan said, “Medicare Advantage plays a vital role in providing high-quality, affordable care to millions of seniors, including thousands in my district, and I fully support efforts to ensure it continues to deliver for patients. At the same time, transparency in how these plans are audited and paid is crucial for maintaining trust in the system and the efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
“I commend CMS, Administrator Oz and the Trump administration for taking steps to address the backlog of audits and for prioritizing the delivery of cost-effective and efficient care. Through these efforts, we can protect the integrity of Medicare Advantage while ensuring it remains a strong option for beneficiaries.”
Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Schweikert said, “As Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee, I welcome these Medicare Advantage audits to address fraud. It is our responsibility to ensure that program incentives are aligned to prioritize patients.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance solutions to ensure Medicare Advantage is working for our nation’s seniors.”
