Smith Statement on the 90th Anniversary of Social Security

August 14, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement marking the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Social Security:

“It has been ninety years since a solemn promise was made to America’s seniors that they should be able to retire with dignity and security. Today, millions of Americans – who spent their working years paying into the Social Security system – rely on this retirement benefit to pay for housing, groceries, medications, and more. President Trump and Congressional Republicans have pledged to protect this vital program, but we also believe in doing more to help seniors have the means to make ends meet. That is why in The One, Big, Beautiful Bill we created a no tax on Social Security policy which provides middle- and low-income retirees with an additional $6,000 tax deduction, meaning almost 90% of America’s seniors will face no tax liability on their benefits. No tax on Social Security will help make Social Security checks go even further for America’s seniors and rewards them for a lifetime of hard work.”
