Chairman Smith on September Jobs Report: More Americans Finding Work as Republican Tax Cuts Grow the Economy

October 02, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its September 2026 jobs report, showing 29,000 new jobs created and unemployment holding at 4.2 percent:

“When Americans have the opportunity to work, earn a paycheck, and provide for their families, our entire economy is stronger. Republicans cut taxes for working families, small businesses, and manufacturers and made pro-growth policies permanent, giving job creators the certainty they need to invest, expand, and create good-paying jobs. As a result, businesses are opening new locations, taking on new projects, and adding workers to their payrolls.

“A good job is only half the battle when Americans are still dealing with the fallout from the Democrats’ $10 trillion inflationary spending spree that drove prices sky-high. Republicans put more money directly back in workers’ pockets through the Working Families Tax Cuts. Thanks to No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, and No Tax on Social Security, the nurse picking up an extra shift, the truck driver working overtime, the hairstylist earning tips, or the senior making ends meet on their Social Security check are all keeping more of what they earn.

“Democrats fought this relief at every turn, and now they want to repeal it and raise taxes on those same workers. Republicans are working to bring down costs – whether it is the price of gas and groceries, health care bills, or education expenses. We will continue fighting to unleash American energy, expand access to more affordable health care and education choices, and bring good-paying jobs back home.”
