President Trump on Monday sought a stay at the Supreme Court, which the Court granted, to prevent Democrats from the House Ways and Means Committee from obtaining and making public his private tax returns while the Court considers his appeal of Thursday’s unprecedented D.C. Circuit decision.
Ways and Means Republican Leader Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) issued the following statement:
“The question before the Supreme Court is much larger than congressional access to President Trump’s tax returns.
“The true question is whether Congress is granted nearly unlimited power to target and make public the tax returns of political enemies — whether they be political figures, business and labor leaders, private citizens, or even justices of the Supreme Court.
“If Democrats under the flimsy guise of ‘audit procedures’ are successful in the courts, it will open a dangerous new political battleground where no citizen is safe from the majority political party in Congress, who can use this ruling to target their political enemies — exactly the opposite of what current law is intended to prevent.
“To protect the privacy of innocent American taxpayers from future congressional attacks, I am hopeful the Supreme Court overturns the D.C. Circuit’s dangerous ruling.”
