Washington, D.C. – President Trump has tapped former Ways and Means Republican Social Security Subcommittee Staff Director, Amy Shuart, to be the new Chair of the Social Security Advisory Board (SSAB). Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement congratulating her:
“With a decade of service on the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, including as Staff Director as well as three years on the Social Security Advisory Board, no one is more qualified than Amy Shuart to lead the Board’s efforts in support of the millions of Americans who rely on Social Security. I commend President Trump on his wise choice and I look forward to working with Amy in her new capacity as the Committee continues our work to ensure the Social Security Administration and its programs can better serve our nation’s seniors, disabled workers, and all others who depend on them.”
Background
- The SSAB is a bipartisan, independent federal government agency established in 1994 to advise the President, Congress, and the Commissioner of Social Security on matters of policy and administration of the Old-Age, Survivors Insurance, Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs. The Board has seven members, with three appointed by the President, two by the Senate, and two by the House of Representatives.
- Amy Shuart has served as a Board Member on the SSAB as the House Republican appointee since October 2022. She previously served on the Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee staff from 2011 to 2021, serving as Subcommittee Staff Director from 2015 to 2021.
