Chairman Smith on October Jobs Report: Republicans are Fighting to Help Working Families Get Ahead While Democrats Threaten to Take Us Backwards

November 06, 2026

Democrats Unanimously Opposed Policies Driving American Job Creation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the jobs report for October 2026, showing American businesses created 165,000 new jobs, with the unemployment rate at 4.1 percent:

“When Democrats last controlled Washington with unchecked power, they spent trillions of dollars and ignited a cost-of-living crisis that still affects Americans today. Now, their incoming majority is threatening to reverse tax cuts for working families, further hurting those who are still suffering from high prices. Today’s jobs numbers continue to show that Republican policies will provide Americans with good-paying jobs while keeping money in their pockets. Thankfully, Americans still have President Trump standing between them and the Democrats’ socialist vision for our country. I will fight alongside the president to give the American people a shot at success. I am committed to protecting the American people from the Washington bureaucrats and the failed policies that Democrats will try to unleash.”
