Ways & Means GOP to CMS: Halt Proposed Medicare Part D Rule Changes

March 7, 2014 — Press Releases

Washington, DC – Ways and Means Committee Republican Members sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Marilyn Tavenner asking CMS to halt the proposed rule changes to Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.  The proposed rule uses a false interpretation as to the non-interference clause between the federal government and the development and delivery of prescription drugs.

As a result, the proposed rule would restrict seniors’ access to medication, limit the number and types of plans available and will raise prescription drug costs.  The letter highlights that the changes are being made in stark contrast to the original policy that was negotiated and passed by Congress.  The unnecessary regulations will hurt the 35 million seniors across the country enrolled in Medicare Part D.

According to the Members, “The proposals contained in the rule will have a serious and direct negative effect on the Part D program and the seniors that rely on it.  CMS’ proposal will result in seniors not being able to keep the plan they have and like today, or see higher premiums and fewer benefits.  It is with these concerns that we request CMS rescind the proposed rule.”
