Republicans Propose Reforms to Deliver Relief, Move Forward with 21st Century Health Care

February 14, 2017 — Blog

House Republicans this week are continuing to work on solutions that will provide relief from Obamacare and lay the groundwork for health care reforms that lower costs, improve quality, and expand choices.

With Dr. Tom Price confirmed as our new Health and Human Services Secretary last week, Republicans in Congress are now the closest we have been to delivering the 21st century health care system Americans deserve since Obamacare was signed into law.

As Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) said this morning:

“Like many others, I live back home, not in Washington. When I’m home, I can’t tell you how many families, how many small businesses, how many patients have been hurt by the Affordable Care Act. They are being forced into plans they can’t afford, they don’t want, and frankly damages them … we’re focused on repealing Obamacare [and] replacing it with the types of reforms that work for patients, that return control to the states, so they can tailor health care to their needs.”

In the days and weeks ahead, Ways and Means Republicans will be taking action to:

  • Deliver relief from the Obamacare taxes that have hurt job creators, increased premium costs, and limited options for patients and health care providers.
  • Eliminate the individual and employer mandate penalties, which forced millions of workers, families, and job creators into expensive, inadequate Obamacare plans that they don’t want and cannot afford.
  • Provide Americans, including those Obamacare left behind, the freedom and flexibility to purchase a health care plan of their choice—not one dictated by Washington—through a portable tax credit.
  • Enhance and expand opportunities for Americans to save and spend their health care dollars the way they want and need—not the way Washington prescribes.

These policies will help clear the way for Republicans in Congress and our new Administration to dismantle Obamacare and move forward with the thoughtful, step-by-step reforms laid out in A Better Way.
