Administration Confirms Americans Will Not See a $2,500 Decrease in Premiums

September 25, 2013

Washington, DC –  Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) made the following statement regarding the Health and Human Services release of its estimated 2014 premiums for the 36 states with ObamaCare Exchanges.

“Today, the Administration confirmed that the President will not keep his promise that Americans will see a $2,500 decrease in their premiums.  Their announcement made clear that Americans across the country will pay more for health care.  Hardworking people in the state of Michigan could pay 50 percent more than they do today.  Americans need relief from this unworkable law, that is only fair.”

When compared to the average 2013 premiums in the individual markets of each state, it is clear the overwhelming number of Americans in the Exchanges will pay more for ObamaCare.  These increased costs will hit younger populations especially hard.  The chart below shows the increase an average 27-year-old will see under ObamaCare.

Methodology:  HHS data on premiums for 27-year-olds is compared to 2013 average premium rates for 27-year-olds for males and females in each state as compiled by the Manhattan Institute
