A special moment happened at the beginning of today’s full Committee markup: a standing ovation for two of our own. Ways and Means Members cheered their colleagues, Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), for receiving the Bipartisan Policy Center’s first Congressional Patriot Award. This biennial award is given to two Members of Congress who selflessly put their country’s needs before their own. Rep. Johnson endured seven years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, and Rep. Lewis is an icon of the civil rights movement. Thank you to these patriots for their service and dedication to our country.
