WASHINGTON — The top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee Kevin Brady (R-TX) entered the following remarks into the Congressional record in support of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.

Remarks as prepared for delivery: 

“I want to thank all my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who have worked on this bill we have before us today.

“Like all of us, I fully support a thorough and effective crackdown on forced labor. The United States has zero tolerance for these abuses.

“The President and his Administration have taken strong action against this exploitation of basic human rights. Under the President’s leadership, the U.S. has implemented targeted orders against imports made in Xinjiang with forced labor.  I have full confidence that the Administration is enforcing these strict rules. 

“Our challenge is to tighten further the dragnet around China and its atrocities, while supporting legitimate trade.  We want to create opportunities for our producers to comply with the law while removing forced labor from our supply chain.

“And just as important, we want to be able to encourage our trading partners to work with us.

“Ending forced labor – and holding China accountable for these gross abuses of human rights– must be a global effort. America should lead the world in halting China’s brutality, and all democracies around the world should join us. 

“I support this measure today and I urge my colleagues to do so as well. And I pledge that as this measure moves forward, House Republicans will work with Democrats and Senate colleagues to perfect it and make it as effective as possible to stop the scourge of modern day slavery in China.”
