Ways and Means Republican Leader Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) will join the American Enterprise Institute’s (AEI) Matt Weidinger in a discussion of the severity of fraud in COVID-19 unemployment programs and the proposed policy reforms in Rep. Brady’s Combatting COVID Unemployment Fraud Act.
The event will take place on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM ET.
A video livestream is available on AEI’s website HERE.
BACKGROUND:
The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in never-before-seen growth in state and federal unemployment claims as the pandemic shuttered businesses and Congress offered unprecedented expansions in benefits. These expansions quickly became a target for fraudsters, and Republicans called for reforms to prevent further losses. Despite vaccines and a reopening economy, President Biden has continued expanded unemployment benefits, allowing for more widespread fraud that Rep. Brady has referred to as the greatest heist of taxpayer dollars in American history.
The event will also cover the upcoming expiration of COVID-19 unemployment benefit programs on Labor Day, how the additional $300 weekly payments affect the labor market and hiring shortages, and future reforms needed to improve the unemployment benefits system.
