WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) released the following statement after President Obama signed the 21st Century Cures Act into law:

“Today is a good day for so many Americans who will directly benefit from this new law. Cures will deliver hope, opportunity, care, and innovation across our country. By creating an environment where our brightest minds can develop and deliver cures for our sickest patients, this law will serve generations of Americans for years to come. It will specifically help cancer centers across the country, including MD Anderson in my home state.”

“I am also grateful that Cures includes ten bipartisan bills from Ways and Means Members. Once again, my colleagues on both sides of our Committee dais have demonstrated how committed they are to improving health care for all Americans.

“This law, and all of the hope and opportunity it brings, would not have been possible without the vision and hard work of Chairman Upton, who finishes his chairmanship at the end of the year. I want to thank Mr. Upton for his years of service and for working so hard to ensure these life-saving policies become law.” 

BACKGROUND: On November 30, 2016, the House voted 392 to 26 to pass the 21st Century Cures Act. Sponsored by Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), this new law includes ten bipartisan provisions from the Ways and Means Committee that will expand access to affordable, quality health care.
