Chairman Smith Statement on Felony Tax Charges Filed Against Hunter Biden
WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement after Hunter Biden was charged with nine federal tax crimes, including three felonies, in California:
“This is far from over. These new charges address years in which Hunter Biden earned millions of dollars from foreign countries by selling access to the Biden family brand – a brand built on and around Joe Biden’s political career. During that time, Hunter Biden attempted to evade justice by concealing his income, failing to pay his taxes, and flaunting the Biden name. Biden Administration prosecutors offered Hunter Biden a sweetheart plea deal that would have effectively forgiven these crimes, and they would have succeeded if not for two brave whistleblowers who stepped forward, at great personal risk, to expose the two-tiered system of justice.
“During the Hunter Biden investigation, FBI and IRS agents were routinely prevented from following leads that might implicate Joe Biden. This indictment further confirms what the two IRS whistleblowers told the Ways and Means Committee back in May and testified to earlier this week. At that hearing Tuesday, Committee Democrats spent hours arguing that there was nothing new to see in the documents and testimony released. Just days later this new indictment details just how brazen these financial crimes were and reaffirms the evidence released this week by the Committee.
“Now that Hunter Biden is being charged for felony criminal activity related to the family business in which Joe Biden himself was aware and from which he benefited, Americans deserve more answers. These charges further confirm the need for Congress to move forward with an impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden in order to uncover all the facts for the American people to judge.”
