Johnson Reintroduces New Employee Verification Act

April 23, 2009

Washington D.C. – Last night Ways & Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member Sam Johnson (R-TX), along with Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) reintroduced the New Employee Verification Act, H.R. 2028 (NEVA).  This worksite enforcement bill would create the nation’s first mandatory employment verification system for all U.S. employers.

In his remarks on the floor of the House today, Mr. Johnson said, “the Act achieves three important objectives.  It ensures a legal workforce, it safeguards workers’ identities, and it protects Social Security.  Employers want, need and deserve a reliable employee verification system and we want to give it to them.”

“Now is the time for the Congress to create a new way forward that prevents illegal immigrants from taking jobs from American citizens.”
