In his health care town hall meeting yesterday, the President was asked by an audience member, “who can compete with the government?” The President responded:
“I think private insurers should be able to compete. They do it all the time. I mean, if you think about — if you think about it, UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? No, they are. It’s the Post Office that’s always having problems.”
In this analogy, UPS and FedEx clearly represent private health insurance plans and the Post Office – which the President said is “always having problems” – would be the new, government-run health plan.
The President’s admission that the government-run plan will be “always having problems” makes it clear why Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee voted against an amendment that would force Members of Congress to enroll in it.
