Camp Statement on Passing of Former Congressman Sam Gibbons

October 10, 2012

Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) released the following statement upon the news that former Congressman Sam Gibbons (D-FL) had passed away.  Gibbons served in Congress from 1962 until his retirement in 1996, and as acting Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee in 1994.  He also served as Chairman of the Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee.

“Sam Gibbons is the image that comes to mind when you think of the ‘greatest generation.’  A true hero, his service to our country – both in World War II and here in the U.S. House of Representatives – is a model of selflessness for all to follow.  Whether on the front lines of battle or fighting to open new markets for our goods and services, Sam Gibbons will always be remembered as he should be, a staunch defender of and advocate for America.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
