Camp, Nunes Statements on U.S. – EU Trade and Investment Negotiations

February 13, 2013

Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) issued the following statements after the release of the U.S.-EU High Level Working Group on Jobs and Growth’s report this morning and the President’s announcement last night in the State of the Union that he intends to launch negotiations for a comprehensive trade and investment agreement with the European Union.

Chairman Camp: “A strong, comprehensive trade and investment agreement with the EU has the potential to create significant good-paying jobs for American workers.  Negotiations will not be easy, but they have enormous potential to open new opportunities for us to sell our goods and services in the EU.  I welcome the President’s movement forward on this effort and look forward to consulting closely with the Administration.  Today’s announcement also reaffirms the need for bipartisan Trade Promotion Authority legislation to provide a clear framework for Congressional consideration and implementation of trade agreements.”

Trade Subcommittee Chairman Nunes: “I applaud the President’s announcement of his intent to negotiate an ambitious transatlantic trade agreement with the European Union.  Bonding Europe and the United States through a high-level trade agreement would help both economies and give rise to a dominant economic alliance that would strongly influence other nations toward free trade.  I look forward to consulting with the Administration over the coming months, particularly with regard to the removal of long-standing sanitary and phytosanitary barriers to our agriculture exports.”
